Chaos at the Movies – Zombieland

Zombieland…where to start…This is your typical modern Hollywood horror film, and doesn’t really cover any new ground. I will give it some respect for at least telling a new(ish) story and not being another cash-cow remake, but the story is thin. Woody Harrelson is the films only saving grace as a neurotic, twinkie obsessed shoot-em up son-of-a-bitch. Honestly, without him, this movie would fall completely flat. It doesn’t really have much else to offer. Other than that, you’re pretty much left with a black-humor (minus most of the black) zombie film that’s well polished, but lacks any real substance. Shaun of the dead used a similar formula (and even a similar story really) and became an instant classic. Partly due to the fact that it didn’t leave most of the gore out. Zombies eat people. People shoot, run over, explode zombies. That’s the way to works. All those gory truths are necessary, and make a zombie movie worth watching. When you make a zombie movie and center it around the living characters without offsetting it with plenty of gory flesh-ripping and head exploding then you end up with something like this. I mean the zombies in this movie don’t require a head explosion or brain piercing. Two blows to the head will do it. What a crock! It’s not horrible, but it’s not going to blow you away either. I would recommend it only if you’ve already seen just about every other zombie movie out there or if someone offers to let you borrow it.

I had high hopes for this movie especially with the word Zombie in the title but alas I was let down. I love zombie gore, the eating of brains, ripping open stomachs and pulling out the entrails while the helpless victim screams. Sadly, this movie was more than lacking in that aspect. Not all was lost though. Woody Harrelson’s character managed to salvage some of this move. Every funny or entertaining part was centered around him. Its been a while since Woody was in a good flick, and though that still hasn’t changed at least his character was freaking entertaining. My biggest gripe other than the lack of gore was the female characters. Come on your living in a post apocalyptic zombie infested world, act like it! So overall not a complete waste but not a kick ass horror flick either. More like a Zombie movie with training wheels for those who don’t like all that gore stuff.

Thanks for the warning. I wanted to see this in the movies but didn’t get around to it. I was gonna “on demand” it on cable but after reading your review I’ll wait to find somebody who’ll lend it to me…
