Chaos at the Movies – The Plague of the Zombies

The Plague of the Zombies (1966)

Rating: ★★★½☆

The Plague of the Zombies is another slab of vintage Hammer horror greatness. It’s not your typical zombie flick, but it is your typical Hammer film. It’s very dry and full of mystery and foreboding ambiance. Kind of strange for a zombie flick I guess, but it works well.

The story starts out simply enough with a well-respected doctor/medical professor and his daughter going to visit a quaint Cornish village that has been plagued by a mysterious disease that has claimed 12 of the town’s men in 12 months. The professor had received a letter concerning the illness by his once favorite pupil who is serving as the village’s lone doctor. They arrive to a town stricken with grief and anger over the mysterious deaths and no one seems to have an answers. The professor is a spry old man, and very inquisitive. He comes to realize very quickly however that the cause of this illness is nothing he’s ever read about in any of his medical texts. Together the two men must attempt to solve the mystery and break the spell before the professors own daughter falls victims to the horrible plague.

I will admit to having owned this movie for about 7 years and never finding the time to watch it and get into it. It, like most Hammer films doesn’t rely on blood or gore to tell a story; it’s all about mood. Hammer films always attempt to drag the viewer into a world of ritual, mystery and death. Watching one of them is more like reading an old horror pulp magazine than anything. Lots of mystery and suspense. If you’re looking for flesh ripping, brain eating zombie, this film won’t do anything for you. If you like a nice creepy story that keeps you guessing, then by all means go for this one (or any Hammer film for that matter)

Mr Chaos

I liked this film. True its not up to my normal bloody zombie horror, but it was a good story. I loved the main guy. I put him up there with Vincent Price as far as movie heros go. Keeps you guessing for a while and has that creepy not sure if its day or night feel to it. I also am a big fan of slow lumbering zombies so it was up my alley. If you are looking for fast paced flesh tearing terror this will not be a good flick for you. But if you want to watch a classic and enjoy horror from the past, then jump on Netflicks and find this movie.
